[cobalt-users] "vanilla" OS on Cobalt hardware?

I've got roughly 20 cobalt servers, and have some concerns about the
operating system and "add-ons". We've run into several show-stopper problems
with these units, usually due to the interactions of the cobalt GUI with the
underlying OS. The folks at Sun do try really hard to resolve these
problems, and have been successful. But bottom line is the GUI and
pseudo-proprietary OS is just too risky for me.

I'm reluctant to simply write off the better part of $100k in hardware, so
I'm wondering how successful it might be to instead use a very generic linux
on these servers, and just forget about the bells & whistles.

Has anyone out there done this?

How did it work out?

What functionality (if any) did you lose?

Any other alternatives I should be looking into?

Thanks for any thoughts......
