That's what is bugging me too, Dan... one part of me at least. ;)
Why should just ONE entity decide what TLDs we use and can't use?
Especially when the public *wants* these new TLDs so badly.
I think there is room for another TLD-provider to run parallel to
ICANN. Maybe New.Net (and a few other TLD hosts) could run the 'fun'
names, and ICANN could run the 'official' stuff (like country-based
TLDs, .mil, .gov and all that good stuff).
I've searched high and low and cannot find any kind of comment from
ICANN on this situation with New.Net. It's like they're refusing to
say anything. I'd really like to know whether they plan to recognize
those new TLDs or whether they're going to come out with their own
versions and cause the dreaded scenario... two version of web sites.
I think at this point that's the only thing holding me back. The worry
that ICANN is going to approve and set into motion their own versions
of these TLD, rather than recognizing the (probably hundreds of
thousands of) domains already registered over there at New.Net.
The "keep the chaos to a minimum" sysadmin in me is saying stick with
ICANN, while the conservative/libertarian in me is saying "No
monopoly!!! Down with Big Brother ICANN!!" ;)
