You're not sounding stupid.
Did you start up PortSentry, and/or add the startup lines to rc.local
and reboot the machine? PortSentry won't react if it's not running. :)
Also, when you were doing the Shields Up! program, were you visiting
it *from* the Cobalt or from your home machine? If you were doing it
from your home machine (or one that isn't the cobalt); then it wasn't
scanning the Cobalt's ports. So sure, it will report that it got in no
problem even with PortSentry running... because the machine tested
wasn't running PortSentry!
That's a couple of explanations, no big deal - and your questions were
*not* stupid. It's completely cool to want to know why everything
seems open when it should be guarded. We just have to make sure now
that your guard dog is awake and/or that you had your test burglar go
to the right house. ;)
