You must only install the new PHP on the standard http server (i.e. copy the php.so file somewhere else than the standard location). Do not touch the PHP on the admin server.
If you want to upgrade PHP on the admin server, it will give you problems with i18n and cce (if this still is what you want to do, please email me for more information).
