You say random; but for some reason, this smacks of something a cron job
is doing. Log the times that you are aware of and try to establish a
pattern.
Checking the logfiles in /var/log would be a good idea, running a tail
on syslog, maillog, accesslog right after you've come back from an outage.
I would also verify that you do still have other connectivity while this
is happening (i.e. can you ping the thing, ftp, ssh etc.) If not, yes, I
would
consider the possibility that your scripting may have something to do with
it,
particularly what you may have done with sendmail. I have a RaQ3 that has
been
known to reboot when sendmail is pushed too hard. Large mailing lists and
accidental mail loops in scripts can often cause this.
I know none of these things are hard answers; and short of being there,
there's not much else I could do except these few pointers. Good Luck.

I know this brick wall thing sounds like a solution; but in my many years
of experience, it's netted me little more than chipped bricks and a
headache.
