In random order, some questions which might need answering are:

1) What program are you using?
2) Have you checked mysql is up and running?
3) If you're not using a GUI, what's the prompt you're seeing? Is it
"mysql>"? Or maybe "[user@host user]$"?
4) Did you read http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/R/CREATE_DATABASE.html?

To make a long story short: please tell us about your setup, steps you've
taken, things you've tried. You'd be a happier camper.
