You'll want to consult legal advise. I'm sort of assuming no lawyers
participate in this list.
My understanding, and I am _not_ a lawyer, is that a verbal contract is also
valid, but it is more difficult to uphold. One thing in your favor is the
initial cheque. Once the client begins payment, the contact assumed to be
accepted (I'm speaking from knowledge within Ontario Canada -- your local
and federal laws may be different).
Best thing is to consult legal advise first.
