Hello Greg and Gerald and list,

the default configuration of the daemon communicates with an APC
SmartUPS! And what do you know - it can be changed to communicate with a
BackUPS! So I made a couple of file modifications and now it appears that the
XTR is recognizing when the UPS is on battery/on power, etc.
I've managed to modify my RaQ4 UPS config files to avoid the
immediate shutdown of the APC BackUPS, but the machine does not seem
to recognize "on battery" or "low battery" status (the LCD says
nothing).
Could you detail a bit your modifications on the XTR? Anything beyond
/etc/sysconfig/ups?
Thanks!

I have been trying to get APC battery backups to work.
My generator switch-over is very slow.
I set the 1st RaQ (using LCD to Master)
When I connect the serial cable to the RaQ and pull the plug
on the APC the RaQ shuts down immeditely.
If I disconnect the serial cable and pull the plug on the
APC the RaQ keeps running.
What's going on here?
This is because of the very primitive way the BackUPS uses the serial
port. You need the correct APC cable (not a regular serial cable) and
definetively change something on the RaQ (/etc/sysconfig/ups,
"MODEL=backups"); since the standard behaviour with the SmartUPS
driver is to raise the wrong signal on the serial port and shut down
the UPS.
More changes may be needed (see above)...
