Subject: [cobalt-users] Moving to new NOC
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
OK, everybody, I'm on countdown now. We move to our new digs (well, our
first own digs) next Monday night. I've got my DNS timeout settings cranked
down to 1 hour already, and will let them sit this way until Sunday when
I'll change them to 1 minute.
The new NOC is now live and behind a firewall. I can put servers into it
without a problem, so I'm going to use my notebook as a server for 24 hours
while I move the big one and verify that everything works well.
Apache was not a problem.
DNS is not a problem.
The registries are, well, a problem but I'm working on them.
However, what I have not figured out is how to avoid mail from being
interrupted. From what I see, I have to do the following:
* Install and configure sendmail on my notebook (mail2.domain.com) to
receive mail for all my domains.
* Create an A and an MX record with a higher cost to my notebook for each
domain.
So far, so cool. Now when the main server suddenly goes off-line, mail will
be routed to mail2, the backup "server".
But... how do I tell mail2 not to do local delivery, but rather to relay
only and to queue only so that it collects mail, then waits until it can
actually get to the better mailserver (smtp.domain.com) and sends it all
the queued mail when smtp.domain.com resumes operations?
I hope the question is clear; thanks, y'all.

This very same question was posted at http://webhostingtalk.com under the
Cobalt forum.
But here is the answer for your benefit (it is actually part of a thread
about
the upgrading of mySQl on a RaQ, but I've done steps 5 & 6 to install mySQl
on
my new RaQ 4i - it works like a charm, and was quite fast as well):
5. go to the control panel > maintance > install software and paste
"http://pkg.nl.cobalt.com/i386/RaQ3-RaQ4-MySQL-3.23.37-1.pkg"
in the install box, install it
6. you are done. your MySQL admin password has been changed to
"cobalt-mysql".
to change your password you would type "mysqladmin -uroot -pcobalt-mysql
password mynewpass"

Hi everyone,
I just want to make a survey about RAQ, we have several Raq XTR and all show
problem.
We had hardware failure after 3 week, cpu bottleneck caused by caspeng
(ASP), Raid integrity failure and configuration error.
Some of the quota are over limit, some of the virtual site quota show as
unlimited, the front panel lock out, (no reboot possible) only the old good
way to reboot the computer (power off, power on) so this is not helping the
other problem. Email statistic aren't working as the same as webmail,
finally we have a the BETTER COBALTS NETWORKS computer with the remaining
working feature of a RAQ2.
Please let me know if anyone have the same problem or even better the
solution.
ALMOST ALL THE RAQS WE HAVE SHOW PROBLEM IN THE FIRST 3 MONTH OF USE(with
minimal load), IS THEIR A FACTORY DEFAULT ?
IF THERE IS A FACTORY DEFAULT, WHY DONT YOU TAKE THE RESPONSABILITY TO
CORRECT THOSE ERROR LIKE ALL OTHER RESPECTABLE COMPANY DO?
YOU SELL SERVER, BUT YOU SUPPORT NOTHING ON IT, WHATS THE DEAL ???
DO THE SELL SECURITY HARNESS WITHOUT SUPPORTING THE STRAP ON IT ?
WHY NEW SERVER SHOW PROBLEM ON FIRST BOOT ?? DID YOU REALLY TEST THEM BEFORE
SELLING THEM ??
i just receive a document from GM saying my car have a factory default, they
find it 10 year after (1990) but they still take their responsability to
repair the problem without any fee ! This is a company that take care of
their client and who show interest in their customer after they have their
money. Take example on them.
On your side the only intelligent thing you answers is "we offer superior
tech support at 200$". You know what, if you put an answering machine saying
that and a auto reply email (i think you already do it) you can maybe save
some money in labours because this is the only answer we are getting by your
"supposed" tech support anyway.
Sometime i have someone smarter that everyone else, he answers "this is not
supported" . Dou you think i m seriously interesed to pay 200$ when i
received those kind of answers from basic tech support !!!!
Is supperior tech answer "we offer platinum tech support for 400$" (and this
cost you 200$ to heard)?????
My last question, why should i pay tech support to repair a server I bought
and that was not working at start ?
Usually i return it or they send someone to repair it ! I have DELL computer
here too, and when i have problem they show the next business day to repair
it and without charge !!! Their POWER APP 120 is good but doesn't meet the
standard of cobalt in feature and GUI. Can you merge with DELL? this way i
will have a great tech support and a great server ???
If someone have the courrage to answers this email i ll be surprised. If you
dont, it will just confirm that you dont give a fuck because you already
have my money and i can go to hell now, you wont even notice i wont order
any other cobalt server.
That's a nasty email i agree (punishment to not reply to my email and to
piss me off ).
I think you have great IDEA, great potential, great product(doesn't need too
much correction after all) but you will probably close down in few time, as
soon a other company will enter the market with better services than you
(what is very easy actually), i m looking forward to shit with dell as soon
as possible.
I also thought that Sun will add some good point to you organisation, i dont
see them yet. I eve offered you to try your new product in a true
environment before lauching them and you refused my offer saying you do not
make business wih other entreprise, you should reconsider the offer because
the "other entreprise are the one that bought your product", and that are
unhappy and stuck with them. Looks almost like a time bomb, after is too
late to return it the server begin to have problem.
I seriously hope you will make change, i really like to use cobalt server,
they are very easy to use, have nice feature and are 1 St for hosting
company. There is all the good point.
the bad are
server are easy to screw by itself
"supposed" tech support suck
nothing is supported on the box
If you correct those problem, i m sure you business and ours will go only
better, especially in those time, the stock market is going down, computer
sales are decreasing, i think you should change the way you play your game
with your customer. I m sorry for the bad word, but you really deserve them.
Please if anyone have comment to do dont be shy !!!! maybe after 100% of the
cobalt users replying they have problem, i small light will appear in the
head of the direction and they will say "hey let make our customer happy and
proud of our product", but the smarter guys will simply say fuck them, this
doesn't pay !!!
Best regards...

hy Rodolfo,
what happens when no mail server is available ? The Mail Server tries to
deliver the mails for round about 4 days. Why are you installing a sendmail
on
your notebook ? Shut down the server, transfer it to the new location and
then
plug it into the network. Then the mails should be delivered to you.
Is that a way ??????

Don't worry. It's probably the mail(man) server taking some load.
Just yesterday, I received a message that was a week (yes, seven days) old
and I've mentioned delays up to 10 days on this list.
It's now May 9th 2001 around 09:30 CET. I'm wondering when this message will
show up. It makes replying to relevant questions almost useless for me. :-(
Take care... Nico

Hi John,
> Has someone experience with updating PHP 4.0.3pl1 to PHP 4.0.5
Somewhat, but *not* yet on my RaQ3 where PHP is compiled with '--with-apxs'.
Have to do that over the weekend... Will post my findings, if you're
interested. I'll do it on a test machine first.
I currently run a few plain RedHat boxen with apache and php compiled from
source. The latest stable MySQL (3.23.37) is installed via rpm.
I used to configure php with '--with-mysql'. This worked with any php
version prior to 4.0.5. php 4.0.5 refused to make a MySQL connection when
configured like that, but there was no error message when configuring! It
just broke when it seemed to work fine.
I had to do './configure --with-mysql=/usr' to get MySQL connections
running. I didn't see any mention in the Change Log on php.net or anywhere
else.
My advice is to be careful and watch your screen as you're configure-ing.
Take error messages very seriously, as always.
Good luck and please post your findings... Nico

Onderwerp: RE: [cobalt-users] Cobalt RAQ4 Mail problem
<original>
We have recently added a RAQ4 to our network and moved some of our
websites over to it. The Cobalt is also handling email for ONE domain
with 5 user. We have a dedicated mail server that handles email for all
other users.
The problem is that for some reason the Cobalt does not want to allow
our mail server to handle the email. For example, http://www.ky.net is
hosted on the Cobalt RAQ server, but my email newt@xxxxxx mailbox is on
our mail server. Mail comes and goes just fine, with one exception. If
an email message originates on the Cobalt server (ie being created by a
CGI script) and is addressed to newt@xxxxxx then the Cobalt will not
send it to the mail server. Apparently the Cobalt thinks that since it
hosts http://www.ky.net then it should also needs to have a local
newt@xxxxxx mailbox too. Since it does not have one, the Cobalt gives
an error saying that the user does not exist.
Any suggestions? It seems like this should be really simple, but I can
not find where anything is telling sendmail to verify the user account
locally for the hosted domains.
Thanks for any help you can give.

You are giving too much personal information away here about your setup....
Check that you have upto date security on your system as there is a slight
chance you may now be HACKED..

Thank Carrie,
I totally agree with that, even simple telnet and pico will allow other user
of the raq to see your connections string !!!
I m wondering if it have a chmod that will allow the page to connect
database, the IUSER to see the contents but not telnet/php/asp/cgi script to
read the connection string in the page or a reference page.
Anyone have an Idea or tricks ?
Stephan !

Hi Mark,
I noticed this too. I had one web site with no MX pointer created, and
hosted on the cobalt! When i send email to that server from outside , it
return error message (normal no MX), but when i send the same email using
the same cobalt smtp server, the mail go to the good mailbox of the good
virtual domain, and i can get retreive the mail with the user.
I think the raq is intellegent enought to know the domain it host and dont
really take a look to the mx record to send the mail. DNS configuration can
be envolve in your problem to (if you use auto dns configuration you maybe
have to look if it created the mx record pointing to the raq itself or your
dedicated mail server.
Dont forget that www.123.com and xyz.123.com dont really matter to email
because the HOST name are not involve in mail delivery. Mx is done to
123.com no HOST name!!!!
Hope this help you
Stephan

Hum, i m really and totally not sure about that but i think locate use a
kind of database that start with the cron or something like that !
the reason is i tried to use locate on some server and i get a error mesage
saying i had to start someting in the cron in order to use locate.
this maybe just a question of updating this database, may take some time,
right now you probably use old info !!
I really hate to say something i m 0% sure about but this maybe give you
some more idea where to look !
