No idea, but the thing you're exactly describing is "modify, delete, scan
allowed" & "create forbidden" in FTP permissions. (from my experience with
the monster named "Novell")...
i'll add that I haven't noticed that problem you're talking about :-)

You don't uninstall a patch, because it wasn't a patch. You got an RPM,
you didn't compile something yourself out... (a .pkg is a tar file of
RPMS)
