There are only 3 reasons that come to mind,
1)you aren't starting it as root
(unlikely, since it managed to write syslog)
2) You already started it before (check for duplicate instances )
3) Some nasty trojan thinggy grabbed all the ports, you have a worm or got
rooted... chkrootkit.org comes to mind here...
