I have a couple of thoughts on this.:
First:

The list server should not be sending the reply, when it gets the reply it
should be configured to note that this person's list messages are bouncing.

I have noticed that all the messages on the list appear to be coming from
the individual poster, rather than from the list itself...I did not see
where I could change this "attribute" on the list preferences page that
cobalt maintains.

This list server should be configured (as is now currently done on all
'recent' list programs) to have the list itself shown as the sender.

Second:
I moderate a number of exceptionally active lists. All of them, even though
each one uses a different program and is located on a different list-server
has the fortunate ability to appear to be coming directly from the
list-server rather than from the poster. Each also has the ability to post
a return message directly to the poster (privately) or to the list server
population as a whole (i.e.: Reply to Sender / Reply to Group). I have the
default set to: Reply to Sender.

Third:
I am a member of one large list that is hosted on an old Unix main-frame at
an Eastern University. That list behaves much as this one does. The
University has advised us that they are attempting to up-grade their
list-server software once they have the monetary resources.

Fourth: <grin>
It is possible that we produce sufficient SPAM on this list to have filled
up the poor person's mail box while he was away on a trip or short journey.
