Except for the lack of a ./configure step, the instructions above are the
standard steps for installing *any* source tarball. After unpacking the
tarball, there's nearly always one or more of the following files: README,
INSTALL or a file with one these words in the filename (might be in
lowercase). Never install anything without reading these files first.
These files usually have install steps, configuration options, warnings,
suggestions, platform specific steps, bug alerts, etc. You also should get
the source from a trusted source. According to my notes, the home for
ipchains is http://netfilter.filewatcher.org/ipchains/. You should always
be able to find the latest version there and the md5sums so you can verify
the authenticity of the tarball. Whenever you download a tarball, rpm, pkg
or anything else from somewhere besides the software's home or a mirror
you're trusting that it is what they say it is.
