Catalog = tells you what is on which backup volume.. nothing is worse than having someone say "Hey, can you pull that image off of the backup media? Yeah, the one we haven't touched in 2 years...that one! It's called ***.jpg..."

With a decent catalog, you can find it quickly. :)

With a decent harddrive on a Linux system, locate and find will do the job. Locate will take about 5 seconds; find will take longer due to the actual search but probably within 10 minutes for a huge drive. And note that find is only necessary for stuff backed up since the last locate database update, usually meaning today.

Since rsync mirrors permissions, ownership, and timestamps, it should be fairly easy to find the correct file using locate or find.
