[cobalt-users] Qube 2 and MS Access

Hello all Subscribers!

I had a look in the archives for hints on this, but did not really find
anything specific. Bare with me for a minute as I try to set this situation
up.

6 computers on our local network use a program called Qcare. It is a
scheduling program for servicing clients (in our case clients with
disabilities). This program allows multiple access to a MS Access database.
Presently, the database is stored on a "host" machine that allows the other
five machines to connect. This causes a lot of strain on the "host"
machine, as it is not built for continuous file access, and being left on
all the time.

This is where our Cobalt Qube 2 comes into play. We added 128 MB clip of
Ram to give it a little more flexibility. We placed the database (MS Access
format) and several Crystal Report templates in a group folder named qcare.
Then we tried connecting to the database from a client computer. It worked,
no problems. The user can access the database and run the reports. The
problems start when multiple users access the database. The next person
that tries to access the database file times out (sort of) and cannot get
in. Are there certain settings required for multiple access of a file on a
Qube 2? Is this even possible? I thought this might involve setting up
permissions with chmod, but I am not sure what permissions to set. Do I
need to install a database enabler on the server to make this work?

Other notes: Each user has the program installed on their computer, so they
are only accessing the database and crystal reports on the "host" or the
Qube 2. One of the major benefits of Qcare is multiple access, so I can't
put the files on the server unless I can facilitate this.

I realize that MS Access is not ideal for a Qube 2, but the Qcare program
was built this way. Any help or questions are welcome. This is sort of an
ongoing project. Offline emails are always welcome.
Thanks!
