Hi Group,
I recently followed suite like many others on this list and changed "named"
on our systems to run as user "named" vs. user "root". But we're seeing this
error in our logs when we make DNS changes in the GUI.
Apr 11 23:25:19 blue named[27721]: couldn't create pid file
'/var/run/named.pid'
-BUT- everything appears to be running okay and with no (apparent) problems.
There is a named.pid sitting in /var/run/ (created by user named) and it's
permissions appear to be correct:
-rw-r--r-- 1 named named 6 Apr 11 00:09 named.pid
The changes we made to change things over to a "named" user were as follows:
useradd -c "Named" -u 25 -s /bin/false -r -d /etc/named named 2>/dev/null ||
:
This creates group/user "named" and sends any connections to a null device.
Then we changed the two "daemon named" references in /etc/rc.d/init.d/named
to the following:
daemon named -u named -g named
Then restarted everything and it seems to work like a charm, short of this
error we see in the logs when we make changes to DNS.
The processes are all running okay as well:
named S Apr11 0:18 named -u named -g named
Does the other members who were discussing these changes early notice this
error in their logs as well (again only when you make changes to DNS via the
GUI)? Any suggestions or comments, or is it something to just ignore since
all seems to work just fine..?
Thanks
Craig
