[cobalt-users] Fix for some MINGETTY ERRORS and Module errors !

hey all,

Just did an extrem search of yahoo, altavista, metacrawler, this list, and a
few others as well.

The search was for a way to kill the device not found errors written to
'messages' by syslog.

I was getting those errors on tty2 - tty6 and it was really filling up the
log. hehe.

Finally found 2 solutions to the problem.

Easy solution: change the lines for tty2 - tty6 in inittab from:

x:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttyx
to
x:2345:once:/sbin/mingetty ttyx

The other solution involves mapping those tty's to certain runlevels so that
they execute 1 time only and then die.

For example: 1:4:respawn:/sbin/mingetty ttyx

I haven't tried the second example due to the fact that it is advisable to
change the rc.x file for this to really be a good fix. However, from what I
hear of it it's supposed to be a VERY NICE fix. hehe.

Also, for those of you having a 'modprobe: can't locate module char-major-4'
error in you message file it may be 1 of 2 things (that I've found).

1) It's related to the above problem. Once you fix that you fix the module
failure.
2) check the modules.conf file in the /etc dir. and comment out the call to
bandwidth_man.

I have killed both errors on my server.

The only problem was I only rebooted once so I don't know which fix, fixed
the module problem.

Well, that's my 2 cents. don't like it, oh well.

Chuck
