You configure it --with-gd=PATH_TO_GD after installing the GD library from
www.boutell.com.  Be sure to consult the install, configuration and GD
sections of the PHP manual first and boutell.com to determine what GD
version you want.  The GD version that produces GIFs is no longer available
at boutell b/c of patent issues so to get GIF support you'll need an old
version of GD which doesn't have PNG support (found in newer versions of
GD).  If you have further questions the php-general or php-install lists at
www.php.net are probably better places to get your questions answered.
