Well, I haven't read the RFC or whatever that defines the IMAP standard, but
I'm guessing that this Folder-Folder, File-Mailbox way of doing business has
it's origin there. I would imagine that 'they' tried to find a way to handle
multi-level mail boxes but just couldn't come up with anything workable.

You'll see stuff like this when you change the client you are using with
IMAP. OE, for instance, will create a folder called 'Sent Items' for sent
emails but NS 4.7x, say, will create one called 'Sent' for the same thing -
neither will recognize the other one as being the 'mailbox that holds all
the sent emails.' Also, you should be able, in any client, to specify which
folders (whether they are actual directories or mailboxes) on the IMAP
server are visible.
