what do you mean.."takes no notice of what I have added to it"???
who are you logged in as when that behavior is observed. If you are
logged in as a user (not admin or root) that user's .profile is
operative. /root/.profile isn't global (if that's what you mean)

By the way, Hendrick...sorry...you already answered this .profile
question (although .bash_profile is a default file already in existence,
but that's not the point) My list traffic was coming in at odd times,
for some reason my upstream was having a problem today...I answered not
knowing you had already done so. Looks like things are more or less
normal now, there suddenly seems to be traffic again. I've been able to
send/receive all other mail all day...for some reason this list traffic
wasn't flowing until about an hour or so ago...and all out of whack
time-wise when it did start to come in for a while.
