A neat little utility which is not too well known, that is bundled with
pine (available by default on qubes and my RAQ2 but I can't say with
certainty pine is on any other hardware) is called "pilot"
At the command line simply bang in "pilot" and navigate to any directory
you like and view the size of any file within that directory. du can be
confusing for many, it is loaded with switches, and can give some people
fits.
Absent a "desktop", pilot will give you straightfoward answers to disc
space isues, as well as acting as giving you some limited file manager
capabilities. From within pilot you can rename (or open if pico is your
editor of choice) copy, edit or search for files. It's limited, but is
one step up in simplicity (for many) for quick checks/renames/edits of
simple files.
Be very careful if you use its delete function!
