My 0.02...
I've long swapped out secondary DNS with a friendly
competitor. And we do it manually without any problems at all. What
we've found is that some of them have to be done now but we can take
our time on the bulk of them. Neither of us have had a bit of a
problem and along the way we figured out one another strength's and
have fed one another consulting clients. While I have to admit that
we both looked long and hard for a partner, our relationship has
been the best business decision I've ever made. We've even went so
far as to swap out root passwords - just in case one of us get's hit
by a bus.
The best part about it is that if one of us is in trouble
arrangements for this or that can be quickly made. I've to a similar
arrangement with another small hosting company. While I do some
consulting for him, we swap out this and that and it works well for
all involved.
Rather than waiting, if you can find someone you feel good
about I'd recomend getting started. The best business moves I ever
made were making close ties with a couple of friendly competitors.
