Likely this is not a firewall or hosts.deny problem. If it were, you would
not see the output from the telnet program, your connection would be
immediately denied. It is possible that you have been hacked. A good hacker
will try not to disturb the system at all, so as to not reveal that he owns
your box.
Either this is a reverse DNS issue, or your login binaries have been
corrupted somehow. Make sure that whoever is doing reverse dns for you has a
reverse dns entry (do an nslookup of your ip address). Install the SSH
packages and see if you can get in that way, then do some poking around to
see what the problem is.
