Thanks very much to everyone who helped with this. Everything is back to
normal - at least functionally.
The weirdest thing I haven't yet figured is that in order to get the MySql
daemon to start on reboot I needed to replace the lengthy mysql script in
/etc/rc.d/init.d to read simply "safe_mysqld &". This works fine and from
the looks of things the mysql script is a copy of the mysql.server script
that comes with the mysql download.
Of course, this doesn't bother me at all. I am just so relieved to be back
to normal behaviour!! And, as a bonus, I've learned a whole bunch about
Linux in the last week.
Thanks again,
Chris

tell me where I can find out which owners I need to reset to sort this out?
Is there any script I can run to sort this out?
