If you are using ftp to edit the file, like I am. Just upload the corrected
file to a directory where you have permission, such as the home directory
and then move it with telnet to the conf directory using your root password
below.

He should type
su -
(with a hyphen) so that the full login shell gets executed. This is how
you make sure that root's environment is properly loaded.
