[cobalt-users] Wish List (TM) regarding Cobalt machines?

Hi everybody,

I haven't been a long time reader of this list, but have enjoyed almost
every minute of it so far. I think it's great when people try to help each
other out a bit, or even a lot.

Thom's post on his contact with a Sun employee of course intrigued me. Side
note: I haven't used my RaQ3 in production yet (and yes, I will use it in
production no matter what you say ;-P). Even worse, I doubt the machine has
run more than 30 minutes so far... It's been under my desk collecting dirt
for some 2 weeks now, I truly am ashamed.

<disclaimer>
Nonetheless, there's something I couldn't find no matter where I looked.
Perhaps it's mentioned somewhere, perhaps not.
</disclaimer>

The issue at hand is the following: I will void my warranty by installing
PHP, MySQL and probably some other stuff on the RaQ3 over the next few days.
I am accustomed to administering Linux servers, which run your standard
stuff: Apache, ProFTPD, PHP, MySQL, Webalizer, you know the drill.

I have always been especially keen on keeping Apache and PHP up-to-date from
source. I couldn't find a document authored by Sun which says: "This is how
we installed Apache, ProFTPD and whatever on the RaQ/Qube. If you want to
run the latest software and are willing to void your warranty, go ahead. No
guarantuees, but this is how we did it. Your GUI will probably be intact
after upgrading." Apache can of course be 'redefined' using the output of
httpd -V and httpd -l, but I'd rather have someone from Sun tell me, just to
be certain.

In short: "Can I have your ./configure scripts?" I'd be happy to pay for
support should I break anything. :-)

I know some documents are available online from users/developers (thanks
everyone for those instructions and links!), but I haven't seen one official
Sun document. Is it perhaps covered by the training kit?

If anyone should feel the need to flame me for being (generally) stupid,
insensitive, distrustful or whatever, I'll be happy to post my private
e-mail address on this list. I'm Dutch, I don't care. ;-)

Warm regards & keep up the good work,

Nico
