Hugely off-topic... totally not relevant.
There is a company called Intercom in Brazil which builds converged
networks. 155Mbps fiber to the USA, 45Mbps backup over satellite, and
they do *everything* for the customer over one connection (voice, data,
Internet, TV, the works).
They've offered me a job as Products Manager (design the products and
services to be offered, educate the salespeople on them, help on tough
sales) and I just couldn't resist, so I said yes.
My boss was one of the founders of Sprint and the 8th employee of MCI
after leaving AT&T (which hired him after he broke into one of their
systems in 1955), so this is an opportunity to learn more than I ever
have before. Of course, I get to work 21 days straight and rest 7, which
ought to be an interesting challenge too.
Bottom line is, I have jumped onto the sand of the Colosseum and will
shortly be surrounded by lions. This particular fear is substantiated by
my boss's final words in the interview: "Sleep while you can; you're
going to love this, but you're going to get screwed harder than you ever
have before."
I'm flying out to Saõ Paulo Sunday (day after tomorrow!), and I'm not
coming back home until Easter. Repeat for three months at least while
they decide if they want to keep me permanently.
I'm staying subscribed to the list, but you'll hear substantially less
of me in the near future (this is actually *good* news for some <grin>).
My two partners will carry on with our nascent hosting business, and
I've suggested to them that this is one of the most useful resources
I've found, so they should be subscribing soon I hope.
All my email addresses will continue to work, and Intercom has a neat
follow-me service where you call a number in California and it follows
me anywhere in the world including Brazil. So if someone wants to chat,
I can do that too.
Wish me luck people, because for damn sure I've bitten off more than I
expected here... I have three days to learn Portuguese... :|
