Your question is rather large! There are a lot of shell tools to do this
kind of thing.
Get a good book on Linux or Unix. That will tell you what you can do.
Warning: if you're not used to the command line, the learning curve is
steep, but it is worth it.
Warning: Sun will no longer give you any sort of support on your Cobalt
system if you do. (Not that this is a great loss in my experience so far!)
