It is of course possible the original poster was sincere, but if he was i
have trouble believing he's as unix literate as claimed, one of the first
things you learn about unix is it's the nonstandard standard...
So much for devils advocacy, or advocacy in any form! :-)

I think you touched on everything that is right and everything that
is wrong with a public mailing list -/
Consider for a moment the cobalt-security list...how many people that
posted here should have been posting there? but it's a more formal list,
and thus discouraged people i think from asking what they may have felt
were 'dumb' questions, they were more willing to ask them here...there's a
point in that...
