[cobalt-users] RE: cobalt-users digest, Vol 1 #2269 - 17 msgs

I installed the Webalizer 1.3 package file from http://pkg.nl.cobalt.com ,
and after installing it through the GUI the GUI listed it as an installed
package. I immediately went into Telnet and looked for it by "locate
webalizer" but nothing. I looked in the uninstallers folder and it's not
there. I tried rebooting the server and still nothing except for in the GUI.
Has anybody ran into this, and if so what did they do to get it running? I
don't want to replace the cobalts stats either I want both to run as well.

Sincerely,
Lonnie

i've been using the -stcp mode, works pretty well so far.

as for udp, i went with the regular mode, using the default ports.

here's the CORRECT answer for FrontPage forms:

You can edit the FP Server
Extension Config file and insert one line in the file. Here are the
specifics:

file to edit:
/usr/local/frontpage/version4.0/frontpg.cnf

Line to insert:
MailSender:me@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Obviously "me@xxxxxxxxxxxx" can be replaced with an address more
appropriate to you. Keep in mind all who are using FrontPage forms will
now see this address, so don't get to cute. :-)

More info on this file can be found here:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/frontpage/wpp/serk/adadv_2.htm

It's been suggested many times...perhaps an email based input will
be better accepted than a web-based system, which I suggested.

You'll have to sort through all the inputs to weed out those that
say things like:

I know you're asking about a RaQ4, I don't have one ..... but
or
Not sure if it works on RaQ's......but
and
The person who posts a "fix" that isn't correct.

Good luck, looking forward to NOT getting lost in the archives.

That's what nobaloney.net does: Cobalt support. Support to ISPs and
IPPs (Internet Presence providers) is our only business at the moment;
I've sold off my ISP and hosting business (though we still do the
technical stuff for both, under contract). Well over half of our
business is Cobalt-related.

We also host the "Official Unofficial Cobalt Qube Users' List"; you can
find it's web-based interface at "majordomo.email-lists.com/qube-users".

We're well-supported by Cobalt and have our own group of "experts" we
can draw on as well <smile>. By May 1st we expect to be able to do
destruction testing on RaQ3s, on RaQ4s, and on RaQ2s.

> I for one would support them!!

Lately we've been inundated by customers with hacked RaQs, and with RaQs
they don't want hacks; it's been hard to keep up. I hope the storm
abates by the end of the week <smile>.

Lest any newcomers or easily offended list-members see this as spamming
the list, I point out that I've answered a specific point brought up by
someone else, that my signal-to-noise ratio is quite high, and that I've
posted probably thousands of helpful posts to this list.

Because of the workload lately, I am 1869 posts behind, but I do try to
read every one of them. I try to give helpful answers whenever I can,
and I even make telephone calls worldwide when a quick call will solve
someone's problem.

Chuck, I'm going to try to be quite respectful, and I point out in
advance that this entirely my own opinion...

Creating sites for Cobalt-owners and users to post may sound like a good
idea, but in fact it's just the opposite. It gives us MORE places to
look. Not a good use of time. I'd like only ONE place to look, if that
were possible.

Though I run a major independent Cobalt consultancy, and have several
suitable domain names, I've refrained from setting up a Cobalt support
site for just that reason. I do host a Cobalt mailing list, but only
because there was a need and no-one else was hosting it.

Yep ! (You can do as per previous thread, and skip the virtusertable bit if
mail is NOT required)

But dont forget that you will NOT get any mail at the NEW
(alternatedomain.com) at all, it will **ALL** get bounced back to the sender
! Do you really want this ? I wouldn't ! Unless the main account also
doesn't collect their mail ?

I WILL work I promise ! I use it all over the place, an example: I have 6
domains pointing to one site, I also get ALL mail from them all to got to
the correct accounts under the master domain (19 email accounts all get
their email from the .co.uk .com .net .org .org.uk etc.)
This means if someone sends a mail to FRED@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx or
FRED@xxxxxxxxxxxx (....etc) they **ALL** go to the account FRED ! <g>
And I only have to set up aliases for the ONE account FRED, I dont have to
ever mess with the other domain names, they are taken care of by the %1 bit
listed previously !

Also works very nicely for the CATCH-ALL email alias too, so all the
misspelled stuff goes into the MAIN account for the site.
I also have a spamaddress@xxxxxxxxxxxx error:nouser SPAM address
working with it all quite nicely too and the nasty spam gets bounced !

Email may be something that is really worth adding :)

If your worried about getting this to work and no one to help later on, I
will be around for a few hours (at least 3hrs = till 4am GMT) yet this
evening (in UK), and you can mail me off list if you require further help to
get it working !

Hi Loryan,

Modify the Cobalt Perl script ( /usr/admserv/cgi-bin/.cobalt/dns/index.pl or
something like that) to actually output that option into the file.

You may be right Lumir. I meant no disrespect to Dan. It seems he does not
understand what I am looking for. I just thought (from what I have read and
heard) that anything was possible with Linux. Meaning you can customize your
server. I have experience with NT servers, this is my first Linux type box.
It seems to me that I should be able to configure the server itself so it
does not use the "nobody" name. If there is not a way to do this, or no-one
has figured out how to do this, I will try other methods.

An additional question to this brings to mind would be... How would
installing FormMail work with the FrontPage forms? Don't the FrontPage
forms use FrontPage script which means having formmail installed won't help
those forms? I have many customers using FrontPage. I get a lot of hosting
business from a local University that has FrontPage classes. I surely do
not want to exclude those customers.

Where is this file located, so I can look at it?

Jon

Hey there,

What's happening here?

I have followed your advice and installed the the above package.
This package is of size 3,119,949 bytes and update bind from
BIND-8.2.2_P5-C1 to BIND-8.2.2_P7-C1. As this appears an
official announcement, I thought that is it...

... until I got cracked again. On inspection and comparision
with http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq3.eng.html
reveals some inconsistencies:

RaQ3-All-Security-4.0.1-9353.pkg is of size 3,119,949 bytes
    and updates bind to BIND-8.2.2_P7-C1

RaQ3-All-Security-4.0.2-9353.pkg is of size 3,120,155 bytes
and updates bind to BIND-8.2.3-C1. (The webpage says that
the size is 3,119,949 bytes which is incorrect.)

Ok, no hassle, just install 4.0.2 over 4.0.1. Now, cobalt is showing
that I have two pkg(s) installed. Ok, no hassle, just uninstall the
first pkg.

Now, the fun begins. On attempting to uninstall of 4.0.1, gives
this error(?) message:

(offline mode: enter name=value pairs on standard input)

What's happening here? How do I uninstall 4.0.1?

Regards,
-Boon

True, however, one needs to know what one is doing, or one may end up
calling yelp!!

Look up the posts -- someone suggested editing sendmail.cf.

>An additional question to this brings to mind would be... How would

There is no reason why it shouldn't. Your form will call the formmail.cgi.

>Don't the FrontPage
>forms use FrontPage script which means having formmail installed won't help

There may be some glitches, but if you design a straight html form, no
problem.

> I have many customers using FrontPage. I get a lot of hosting

It does not matter, the server will process the form through cgi rather
than through FP.

> >At least look at the script so you can get a clue how that is done. There
> >is a small perl library called mail-lib.pl that has a simple syntax for

>
>Where is this file located, so I can look at it?

Well, it is a library, so you may get a bit confused if you don't know
perl at all.. The formmail.cgi contains a similar scheme.
You may be interested in the part is the code that you insert into your
perl script that the library handles.

It goes like this:

&send_mail($auth_admin_from_address, $user_email, $subject, $message);
&send_mail($user_email, $auth_admin_email_address, $subject,
$admin_message);

This sends the email from admin to the form user and from the form user to
admin. The message may be preformatted based to whom it goes.
Of course, one has to parse the form input prior to that, but it is not
that difficult.

I have a hack of the formmail that is configurable through simple setup
file, on a drawing board. I'll post a link in about a week, so you can look
at it.
I'll include some forms and a how-to.

LGJ

Hi John,
You could add/alter your .htaccess to include ErrorDocument 404 /index.html
But I dont know if this will interfere with FP, (dont use it)
Alternativly, you could add the same line, but in the VirtualHost tags in
the httpd.conf file, or the srm.conf file for global changes - httpd.conf
will probably be best !
