I'm not going to quote anyone on this thread as I don't see the need to
point out what's already obvious.
Here's MY opinion on the whole "Should we have multiple places to look for
help or just one?" discussion:
The knowledge base is pathetic. Thom is working with Cobalt to try and
rectify this (WooHoo Thom!). Many times I've seen people brag about their
access to the knowledge base and how they *could* get things inserted if
they (the person making the claim) deemed it important enough - this is just
ridiculous.
One person, or even two people, should not be king and lord over what
information the rest of the Cobalt users get to see.
And quite frankly, those offers and boastings have never amounted to a hill
of beans. Nothing ever gets added.
The Cobalt-users archives are a wealth of information.
But again, they are hard to navigate, especially if you don't know what all
of the synonyms are for the terms you're looking for. Being a newbie and
trying to go through the archives is an exercise in futility. How is a
newbie supposed to know to look for "BIND" when they're trying to fix DNS
problems?
And let's not even get into the millions of posts asking "What is a good
shopping cart?" or "What web-based email should I use?" that clutter up the
archives.
Having one place, or two places, for information is just plain STUPID. It is
completely and totally idiotic.
How would you like it if there were no Google? You could ONLY use Yahoo?
No Altavista, no Go.com, etc. etc. etc.
As far as people feeling as if they have some sort of "mission" to moderate
ALL of the resources out there and how they don't have time to do that, I
say - get an ego check. Truly, the pompous attitude of "you can't survive
without my input" makes me laugh. I have never seen anyone on this list ask
another person to please go visit a certain resource because there was an
absence of knowledgable people there. No one has been assigned as the one
and true Cobalt guru that simply MUST be present on all available Cobalt
help sites. If you think you have, let me be the first with the balls to say
it... GET REAL. No one died and made you Cobalt God.
I'm going to continue to develop CobaltHosts.com as I have time. People are
free to visit as they choose - or not. I'll be happy to list off all of the
other available Cobalt resource sites out there (like RaqResources).
I believe in freedom of information.
And for someone to say "there shouldn't be multiple places to look for help"
and then that same person advertise his/her services for consulting or
fixing problems that we should be able to find the answers to ourselves (and
could if there were multiple places to look for help) - well, I'm just not
into monopolies, I'm not into choking freedom of speech and freedom of
information just so I can make a buck.
Quite frankly, this entire thread and the responses I received regarding the
discussion boards at CobaltHosts.Com have really showed me who is in this to
help other people - and who's in it just to stifle free information so that
they can make a buck being the monopoly of where to get help.
I'd like to encourage EVERYONE to put up webpages and sites with
Cobalt-specific or even web hosting specific help. If you've got something
that you feel doesn't get enough coverage in the knowledge base or on this
archive, by all means - tell the world about it!!
Don't let one or two people stifle the free flow of information that has
made the Internet what it is.
And by all means, never EVER let them intimidate you into giving up.
Remember, they have their opinion, and you have yours. If YOU feel that you
could provide a positive input into this community, then DO IT.
And send me your URL. I'll post it and advertise it proudly - rather than
trying to keep that precious information from the people who need it so that
the only way people who get help is to hand me their money.
