Jezus jezus jezus
well we got 3 boxes hacked and even after restoring one from the CD we got
hacked into one..why because the bind patch did not take...Can I blame
Sun/Cobalt...sure...BUT i should have been smart enough to see that it did
not take..and then called cobalt...
Anybody crying it is sold as an appliance ..your right BUT that does not mean
you have to assume no responsibility.
I agree, am I fuming.....yeah ..did I waste time yeah...BUT hey ..we have a
ton of servers we use HP mainly and yes we ahve a few ( 8 now)
cobalts...and as long as you use the cobalts for what they are designed for ,
they work great..... ONE thing we did learn..we were running dns on the
machines, because the way cobalt uses their naming and sendmail config.
after the hack we spend some mroe time investigating it..and we just not use
the DNS on the cobalts, whe have the dns running on 2 HP's ( HP UX) and they
ONLY run dns.... so let the little buggers hack in..who care, let them even
take one down...a new box is quickly online
and yes COBALT has allowed us to give options to people we could not provide
with the HP's or the SCO's or the standard redhat linux boxes
This discussion wont stop for a long time... but hey I take my hat of for
Cobalt, they have provided me with their support when I asked, no questions
asked, they called even back afetr we decided to restore the machine, because
they had another thing they wanted to check.
The 2 things I learned is...i DO need to check the support pages a BIT more
often...2 get yourself a cheap intel linux box...a 66 mhx 386 box will do
the trick and use THAT as a DNS and hey let the kiddies have e field day....
