the just sit there?????

The Legato networker client has its portmapper and some other services running on ports 7937-7950 (depending on the installation). In addition, a typical installation uses ports 8001-8014 and 100001-10600, depending on what you have.

Ports 7937-7950 is used for the portmapper and some other stuff, the ports 8001-8014 is used for devices, and 100001-10600 is the connection ports. I can't exactly say I like this behaviour, but I'm not in a position to change it...

More info can be found on <http://www-ftp.legato.com/support/bulletins/354.html>

If you don't use Legato, you may just as well kill it from the startup scripts - The less services you have, the better it is.
