Well, I'm a self-professed newbie to the whole Server thang, but from what I
can tell from talking to a friend of mine who's been involved on the net
running ISPs for years -- if cobalt/sun had to compensate us for hacker
damage, they'd quickly go out of business. Hacking seems to be just part of
the 'net landscape. According to him: You get hacked, you rebuild, you
patch, and you do as many backups as you can manage until it happens again.
(This is all according to my friend...my recent experience was my very first
time getting hacked.)

It would be, >>>in my opinion<<< unrealistic/unfair to hold Sun liable for
some genius 14-year-old's personal vendetta or someone's wish to be c00l in
the hacker scene by having a nice fat list of machines they'd compromised.
That's like holding Ford responsible when someone breaks into your car and
they're able to defeat the alarm system. But, that's just my opinion. If
someone wages a class action suit, and I receive a $25 check in the mail for
my damages or something, I'll cash it. ;)

I guess it's the price of being part of a worldwide network -- it's like
going to a party, or work at an office. You get to meet a lot of people, but
you also risk catching their colds, or incurring the occaisional wrath of a
dork or two.

Hehe...But to take the car analogy one step further -- anyone know of
Insurance Companies that cover downtime due to hacking? Kind of like theft
insurance on a car? That would be a strange addition to the insurance
industry...but I know they have insurance for event planners, for rain-outs,
etc.
