Hi Gang!!
I hate to sound like a newbie, (except this isn't a newbie question at
all!)
My qube needs more memory (on order, but from crucial, not cobalt) so to
conserve resources I attempted to shut down httpd since the qube's only
real function is mail, and there were 8 instances of httpd running. 3
/etc/admserv and 5 /usr/sbin/httpd. I changed httpd.conf to run less
child processes for next time.
Problem is, httpd won't shut down (OR I'm giving it the wrong comand
which seems clear at this point)
As root (of *course*)I did a: /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd stop (didn't work)
so, undaunted I cd'd into init.d and simply did a httpd stop (didn't
work)
I killed all running instances of httpd after checking ps aux, and httpd
simply spawned new processes
I killed admserv and *then* killed all running httpd processes, *then*
did httpd stop and it seemed to work.
OK, I acheived the goal, but in a time consuming manner and not with the
elegance always associated with UNIX.
Can anyone give me a better way of doing this for next time?
In other words, a "one-size-fits-all" httpd *and* admserv stop (and
later, start) command?
Geez, I rtfm'd myself into the middle of the night on this, so I thought
I was doing the right thing <grin> but I suspect that this must be
slightly cobalt-specific.
Regards & TIA,
-Colin
