I don't think rebooting will reset your password. If the mechanism that coordinates the root and admin passwords is stuck/hung/whatever, then rebooting may fix it. Try changing the admin password from the GUI after rebooting and check to see if it also updated root's password.
I am anxious about rebboting the machine. Last time I did that beacuse of the hacking, I had to take it out of my ISP site and it costed me dearly to do so. I would like to be 250% sure that it will rebbot and that httpd will start, as if it does not I wont even be able to get it started via SSH and so wo't be able to do anything on the machine
Another possibility: <WARNING: THIS COULD SERIOUSLY SCREW UP YOUR MACHINE>You could edit the /etc/password file and either remove the encrypted password for root or change it so it is the same as the encrypted password for admin.
Thanks for the advice but I had enough adventures for the week :-) I probably can't even access the file as I don't have root access.
