Did you remember to su to root?
(as this would be a reason why, the rpm program cannot open it's database)
Apart from that, you can try downloading the newest MySQL RPM and doing a:
rpm -Uvh <filename>
And see if it will let you update the system.
Another option is to install MySQL from source.
