I don't think rebooting will reset your password. If the mechanism
that coordinates the root and admin passwords is stuck/hung/whatever,
then rebooting may fix it. Try changing the admin password from the
GUI after rebooting and check to see if it also updated root's
password.
Another possibility:
<WARNING: THIS COULD SERIOUSLY SCREW UP YOUR
MACHINE>
You could edit the /etc/password file and either remove the encrypted
password for root or change it so it is the same as the encrypted
password for admin.

Actually, it could take less than ten minutes for a hacker to get into
your box.
