Of course the Buyer beware chestnut is always there...but I believe the
point is that Cobalt sells on the concept that operating the servers is
easy and profitable.

Their warranty and system implimentation discourages the owner from
learning about system administration.

If you look in the Knowledge base you'll see statements from Cobalt

     I'm not very familiar with Unix (or not at all familiar), and am
concerned that I only know enough to be dangerous. Do I
     need to be a Unix guru to administer a Cobalt Product?

     No, you don't have to know any Unix at all. 

So, from the horses mouth...Cobalt tells prospective owners that they
don't have to know Unix(linux)

Given that marketing hype, it's not surprizing that a lot of owners
are ill-prepared to patch their way around a very unique implimentation
with constant warnings that their warranty will be voided if they make any
substansive changes.
