Actually, I think that's where I found out about PAM, not in the emails.
But it doesn't explain how to edit the Apache configuration file for
allowing it, restricting the scope to authority commands, and avoiding
the browser having to search for .htaccess files in all the
subdirectories that aren't password protected for each call.

I've now got htaccess enabled for passwording in three standard
subdirectories for any new site. Nice - when I eventually got there!
