Spam, in its original sense, meant multiply-posted (commercial)
Usenet messages, as opposed to cross-posted Usenet messages,
which used to be known as Velveeta.
Unwanted advertising on Usenet was nothing new, but most
people used newsreaders that dealt with cross-posted articles
intelligently so after the first time you wouldn't see it
again. What made Canter & Siegel so "popular" was that the
message was posted *separately* into thousands of newsgroups
so that each time you opened up a newsgroup, there it was.
Here endeth Usenet History 101.
