I have been looking for a similar solution for the Qube and now that the
Qube3 is x86 compatible I'm able to trial the Dantz Retrospect Linux client.
It installs on the Qube3 much like the Legato client does and you use the
desktop version of Retrospect (on a Windows PC) to "suck" data from the
Qube3 to whatever backup medium you want.

A couple of day ago I ran a trial where I did a full backup of one Qube3 and
restored it onto a second Qube3. The second Qube3 is now a "mirror" of the
first. The only "errors" I got were compare errors during the backup phase
where system logs etc changed between being backed up and compared.

I have tried the client on a RaQ4 and it appears to work fine, but I do
intend to do some more tests.

I should point out that the Retrospect Linux client is in beta test and does
not appear anywhere on their web site. Dantz <http://www.dantz.com.au/> are
very particular about pre-announcing products and do extensive pre-release
testing before saying anything publicly. Hence you will not find any
mention of this software on there web site.

Why do I know about the Retrospect Linux client?

As an active member of the Retrospect users list and having voiced opinions
on the need for a Linux/Unix client I was invited into the test program. At
the time I only had MIPS based Cobalt Appliances, so until the Qube3 was
release I have not been able to give it a go.

Anyway, Dantz are happy to let almost anyone have access to the beta
software provided they sign up to the NDA and understand that it is beta
software.

If you are interested in taking this further, contact Paul Mackinney;

I'm sure he'll let you have access to the download site.

I mentioned that you will need a desktop version of Retrospect ... the
version which supports the Linux client is only available for Windows
although the capability is planned for the MacOS version. Unlike Legato,
Dantz Retrospect Backup is very reasonably priced.

Cheers, Malcolm
