Thanks for taking the time to write a detailed response, Brandon. I'm
quite comfortable with the implications of all the topics you describe,
though; I'm afraid I misinterpreted your original post as implying that
there was something subtle in the workings of DNS and HTTP that caused a
benefit from their separation.

I should've been more specific with the question, as in... "Other than
the expected benefits of fault-tolerance and resistance to cracks, what
benefits would there be from separating DNS and web servers?"

Ah well... live and learn. Sorry to waste your time, but at least it now
gets to the archives where I'm sure at least four people will benefit
from it in the future. A valuable contribution anyway. :)
