I had the var problem yesterday it was 100% full and it cause
email (pop3) problems but I could telnet in I deleted some of the /var/log
log files but could only get 71% free them this afternoon the telnet thing
happened

Hm... if you have access via serial cable, try a "df" to see how much
space is left on the /var partition. If it is too less, you might get
this error.
