If you do not mind a commercial offer, we @Mermaid offer two different
trafic statistics solutions. One of them works almost exactly like you've
outlined, using ipchains (or ipfwadm on older RaQs) to track each NIC - and
saving the stuff often to disk in case of disk crash. It has a web-interface
for viewing stats.
We also offer a cheaper statistics program that works on the logfiles only
(tracks web, ftp and mail traffic). It's currently on sale for 50$ per
server license.
If you're interested, please contact me for more information (demo, pricing,
etc.)
