Re: [cobalt-users] My dog ate my Unix admin book

If you are asking for the chmod octet numbering system, it works
out like this

Field of 4, max of 7 in each field (7777)
Right now lets focus that down to a field of 3 (777)
Read (r) is 4
Write (w) is 2
Execute (x) is 1
The last three fields are owner, group, world

The designation you are asking for (rwx--x--x) would be 711.
7 (owner) 1 (group) 1 (world)

The first field (when using the four octet sequence) selects the
set user ID (4) and set group ID (2) and save text image (1)
attributes. (Note, when you do a chmod with only three octets
[777] it ignores field one.) I don't know why you would need
this field, but Cobalt does have some things that have it used
(which is why you see odd letters (not r,w,or x usually an s or a
t) on some files like [rwS--s--t] (Note: I don't think that is
a actual mode setting for a file, just an illustration and I only
mention it because it pops up all over a RaQ when at command
line. I have always just dealt with three octet modes)
