DISCLAIMER: I still don't run databases on my server; that's a couple of
weeks away. Just common sense here...
I think MySQL listens on a port (don't know which one) for connections,
as most other "server" type programs do on Linux systems. If you tell
your MyODBC to connect to server.domain.com, port xxxx, it should work
without your installing any further software on the server.
Read the MySQL docs (FAQ, website, man pages, etc.) and see if there's a
port number it listens on. Also check your /etc/services to see if MySQL
is listed as using a port.
A guess, mind you, but a reasonable one.
