Both the computer press and the popular press have been really beating up on the P4 and on Intel for producing it, lately. It seems that for most current software there's a speed disadvantage in using it.
What I've been reading about it is that stuff written and compiled for the new p4 extentions (mmx, sse, katmai's new intstructions, whatevertheyrenowcallingit) runs faster. Also existing multimedia apps and quake tend to run faster. So unless cobalt wants to make modifications to the kernel and applications themself like stampede linux does, it most likely won't do too much good and will cost significantly more.
