[cobalt-users] changing character set in bash

Why are the most easy things always the most difficult ones... on Cobalt
;-)

Does anyone know how to change the character-set/keyboard in bash
(shell)? On other linux boxes, I simply create an .inputrc file in the
home directory with the following lines

            set meta-flag on
            set convert-meta off
            set output-meta on

which allows me to use non-english characters in bash. Doesn't work on
Raq3 though.

Any idea where to proceed from here? (btw: I can change the char-set in
Pine)
