A mailing list where people can sub/unsub to a list at any time, but only
ONE person can post to the list. This is on a shared RaQ4, so I can't use
the relay settings to just allow mail from the one person. Can this be done
without major hacking of the RaQ4?
Paul, for the future, the majordomo list archives are very good in
addressing these questions.
http://www.greatcircle.com/lists/majordomo-users/
(greatcircle.com is majordomo's home in case you didn't know)
But for now, on a RAQ3 (although RAQ4 is probably pretty similar)
Use the gui to allow sub/unsub (these are checkmarks in the "mailing
list" screen in the "manage list") and then Telnet in to change the
.config file to make the list moderated.
Your config file can be accessed through an email command to
majordomo itself -- this is how it's usually done -- but, because
there's a problem with that on Raq3, I do it by hand. It's at:
/usr/local/majodomo/siteweherelistis/lists
and you'll see the config for the list right there. Just scan it for
the line about "moderated" and follow the instructions -- it's very
well commented.
Also, make a copy of the config file before you do the change in it
just in case. Once you do the change it's activated (you don't have
to restart anything).
Give the list password to that one person and have them use it when posting.
Explanation on how email commands are done (including the one to
change configs, by the way):

The FAQ for Majordomo:

But DO check the mailing list archives because they are very good on
basic questions about commands and all that.
Or is there any CGI script that can
accomplish this?
Scores of them in PERL.
This is THE place for free and cheap PERL scripts (in my opinion)
http://www.perlarchive.com/guide/
Just click on "emailing" and then "mailing lists" to see a bunch of
these things in Perl.
In MY opinion, a person who's doing some very good "majordomo-style"
PERL script writing (I mean FREE scripts) is Justin Simoni -- his
program's Mojo Mail and he's at
http://mojo.skazat.com/
We also have used nomodomo (at Big Nose Bird -- very good programmers)
http://www.bignosebird.com/carchive/nomodomo.shtml
Most of the PERL mailing programs specialize in having one person
send mail and also have sub and unsub through web site access. I
think MojoMail may be allowing it through email now but I'm not sure.
Hope that helps.
Alfredo
